Position Overview

Under direction from the Superintendent schedules and performs preventative maintenance and repair of all phases of operations of the Wastewater plant and pumping stations.  Prepares and submits requisitions for needed repair parts.  Trains employees in preventative maintenance. Under direction coordinates and schedules required equipment maintenance.  Completes shop work orders that are needed for repairs. Assist with plant operations as needed. Maintain records indicating corrective maintenance measures performed as well as daily preventive maintenance performed such as greasing equipment and oil changes.  Implement an effective maintenance schedule to be strictly followed to ensure cost savings to the city and minimal equipment failure. Report any and all equipment failures and repairs to the Superintendent as soon as possible.

Qualifications Required

Must have high school diploma or GED equivalent;  must hold grade IV wastewater operator certification through ADEM; must have class A CDL; must possess a mechanical aptitude and knowledge of electrical systems to ensure proper specifications are met;  reading skills to comprehend diagrams, blueprints and technical specifications.  Must have two (2) years in maintenance supervisory experience or have equivalent combination of training and experience in general maintenance and electrical background.  Must possess manual dexterity to use a variety of tools.  Must hear well enough to communicate in person and over the phone (hearing aid acceptable).  Must speak clearly and loudly enough to be heard and understood over phone and in person.  Must have body movement to move freely about and agility to work in confined or awkward positions.

Job Summary

Duties & Responsibilities

A. Planning and Administration (25%) – Under direction coordinates and schedules required equipment maintenance. Order parts and equipment needed to perform various maintenance tasks. Completes shop work orders that are needed for repairs. May initiate requisitions for parts or equipment. Assist with plant operations as needed. Maintain records indicating corrective maintenance measures performed as well as daily preventive maintenance performed such as greasing equipment and oil changes.  Implement an effective maintenance schedule to be strictly followed to ensure cost savings to the city and minimal equipment failure. Report any and all equipment failures and repairs to the Superintendent as soon as possible.

B. Equipment Maintenance Operation (65%) – Maintain all plant equipment, including pumps, screens, compressors, basin mechanisms, tank and pumping station equipment and electrical components. Maintain all portable equipment including vehicles, mowers and pumps. Change light bulbs, and air conditioning filters as needed.  Perform electrical inspections and repairs when such failures occur. Rebuild pump internal components and replace pump bearings as needed. Assist in grounds maintenance as needed.

C. Supervision and Leadership (10%) – Supervises plant employees to ensure accuracy and completion of assigned tasks. Assists in training new employees. Coordinates schedules with the superintendent. Fills in as plant superintendent (Grade IV Operator) from time to time. Has a good understanding of division rules & regs and City’s rules & regs to administer to plant staff. Submits and obtains approval of leave time. Assists in other departments as needed. Attends division and departmental meetings and safety meetings. Maintains uniform and safety attire to conform to dress code and safety rules. Performs additional tasks as needed or upon request.

Job Specifications

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities – Must possess a mechanical aptitude and knowledge of electrical systems to ensure proper specifications are met; reading skill to comprehend diagrams, blueprints and technical specifications.  Must possess manual dexterity to use a variety of tools.  Must hear well enough to communicate in person or over the phone (hearing aid acceptable).  Must speak clearly and loudly enough to be heard and understood over the phone and in person  Must have body movement to move freely about and agility to work in confined or awkward positions.  Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.  Must be able to withstand exposure to in climate weather, dust, gases and chemicals.

Credentials and Experience – Must have high school diploma or GED equivalent; must have two (2) years in maintenance supervisory experience or have equivalent combination of training and experience in general maintenance and electrical background.  Must be a Grade IV Wastewater Operator.  Must have Class A CDL.

Special Requirements – Be willing to comply with City of Phenix City policies and work rules.  Be willing to work during non-duty hours, holidays and weekends when necessary to achieve goals. Be willing to adhere to safety regulations and wear required safety equipment.
