Job Title: Service Maintenance Worker (Semi-Skilled) – Water Distribution

Position Overview

Performs manual labor in the construction of water lines. Must be able to make water taps install main lines, make point repairs, change out water meters, repair fire hydrants, valves, as well as cut and clear right of ways through out the City.

Qualifications Required

Must have high school education, GED or equivalent training and experience; must possess a valid driver’s license; must be familiar with various pipefitting to include PVC, concrete pipe, terra cotta pipe, etc.; must have knowledge of safety including accident prevention; must possess comprehension skills to understand directives; must have skills in the operation and safe use of tools and equipment to include pipe saws, jackhammers, tamps, shovels, rakes, etc.; must exercise courtesy and tact in dealing with coworkers and general public; must be able to work under moderate supervision.

Physical Qualifications Required

Must be dexterous enough to use hands and fingers to grasp and manipulate tools and/or equipment; must be agile enough to climb in and out of truck to load and or unload necessary equipment; must be able to work on uneven terrain in traffic areas: must possess adequate upper and lower body strength to maintain control while operating tamping machines and/or other equipment while on uneven terrain; must hear well enough to receive communications over a two-way radio (hearing aid acceptable); must speak clearly and loudly enough to be heard and understood in person and/or over two-way radio; must see well enough to safely operate equipment; must be able to lift equipment up to 75 pounds; must be able to withstand exposure to the elements to include extreme heat and/or cold; must pass a pre-employment drug screen.

Qualifications Preferred

Prior experience working in construction and/or with water lines preferred.

Job Title: Service Maintenance Worker (Semi-Skilled) – Water Distribution

Reports to: Service Maintenance Supervisor

Job Summary

Employee in this position are responsible for maintenance, and/or repair to water lines which includes the installation of main lines, service laterals, broken lines as well as new taps, concrete work, landscaping, painting, general labor work.

Duties & Responsibilities

A. Main Line Construction (70%) – Installs main sewer lines, new taps, repair broken line services, cut a clean right-of-ways, and assist in televising sewer lines.

B. Traffic Control (10%) – Assist in positioning traffic control devices around work zones to conform with the manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, direct traffic around work zones using traffic control devices, hand signals and two way radios.

C. Maintenance of Equipment (10%) – Gather necessary tools and equipment for jobs and loads onto truck. Ensures tools are in good condition and proper working order; cleans tools and equipment and ensures that tools and equipment are stored properly.

C. Service to Department (10%) – Attends departmental and safety meetings as required, maintains uniforms and safety attire to conform to proper dress codes and safety rules at all times, performs additional tasks in support of the department as needed or upon request.

Job Specifications

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities – Knowledge of proper operation and maintenance of equipment. Knowledge of Utilities Department safety rules and procedures. Knowledge of policies, rules and regulations of the City of Phenix City. Reading skills to comprehend directives, gauges and indicators. Writing skills to document logs or similar non-complex forms. Verbal communication skills to converse with supervisors and crew members regarding work related activities. Math skills to count, add and subtract whole numbers. Skills to comprehend written and oral instructions. Skill to operate two-way radio to communicate with other work crews or dispatcher to receive and transmit information. Automotive maintenance skills to make adjustments and minor repairs to equipment. Ability to follow instructions and efficiently complete tasks. Ability to exercise judgment particularly in tasks involving safety of self and others. Ability to work under immediate supervisor and carry out assigned tasks. Ability to work as a member of a team. Able to lift up to 75 pounds. Able to withstand exposure to the elements to include extreme heat, cold, excessive rainfall and wind.

Credentials and Experience – High school education, GED or equivalent training and experience. Must possess a valid driver’s license.

Special Requirements – Be willing to comply with City of Phenix City policies and work rules. Be willing to work during non-duty hours, holidays and weekends when necessary to achieve goals. Be willing to adhere to safety regulations and wear required safety equipment.
