Phenix City has always had such a colorful history. Before the cleanup in 1954, Phenix City was called “The Wickedest City in America.” There was any vice a person could think of in Phenix City. Our town was under Marshall Law when the governor of Alabama ordered the National Guard to come in and clean up Phenix City.
There are and always have been so many myths about Phenix City. Our history is so fascinating. We have had so many names (Brownville and Lively), but the name Phenix City stuck on February 23, 1883. A movie was made about Phenix City in 1955. There have also been many books on crime and some of the people of our town.
I remember as a small boy car tags that said, “Phenix City A Great Place To Live.” I think as a city we have lost that pride. We, as citizens of Phenix City, have overcome the incredible challenges of our past. By learning from and honoring our past we have built a foundation for a strong and prosperous future. I truly believe our best days are ahead of us here in Phenix City. Our past is now history. All we have left are photos of yesterday’s memories of the places and people. But no one can take our pride away. So I try to live by the motto, I AM PHENIX CITY PROUD.
