Job Summary

Under general supervision inspects, diagnoses problems and repairs automotive systems and components, to include brakes, fuel, exhaust and electrical systems and equipment; performs preventative services on equipment and vehicles to include replacing filters, worn or damaged pats and adding fluids as needed; troubleshoots malfunctions to determine cause and type of repair needed in equipment and vehicles.

Essential Job Duties & Responsibilities

The following duties are normal for this position. Other duties may be required, assigned and expected aside from those set forth below to address operational needs and changing operational practices.

A. Equipment Repairs (30%)

  • Inspects and repairs gasoline and diesel powered equipment.
  • Repairs or replaces belts, hoses, fuel and hydraulic lines; inspects tires for wear and tear; replaces blown fuses and bulbs; inspects signaling equipment and safety lights to ensure proper operation; replaces spark plugs;replaces worn electrical wiring in vehicles and equipment; replaces motors, blades, and other repairs on lawnmowers and equipment as needed, tests equipment to ensure it is performing efficiently and properly and makes adjustments as necessary.
  • Performs all other equipment maintenance as needed.

B. Preventive Maintenance and Service (40%)

  • Performs scheduled preventive maintenance on equipment to include replacing air, fuel and hydraulic filters.
  • Inspects brakes to ensure proper operation, replaces brake pads and adds fluid as needed.
  • Inspects vehicles and equipment, checks fluid levels to include water, oil and hydraulic fluids. Performs lubrication services to equipment and sharpens blades as needed. Verbally informs maintenance superintendent of repairs to be documented on service log.

C. Tuning (15%)

  • Confers with operators and drivers to determine problems or troubleshoots vehicle or equipment malfunctions to determine cause and type of repair needed.
  • Informs superintendent of problems and supplies needed to make repairs.
  • Ensures that engine if off and vehicle/equipment is stabilized before beginning repairs. Follows necessary safety procedures to include disconnecting battery cable to avoid causing further damages to the equipment and to prevent personal injury.
  • Discards used or worn parts in proper receptacles.
  • Tests vehicles or equipment to ensure repairs are completed and operating properly.

D. Service to Department (15%)

  • May assist in other departments as needed; may operate equipment; maintains and cleans shop to ensure work area is free of debris and possible safety hazards.
  • Operate two-way radios to send and receive messages.
  • May perform building maintenance duties as requested.
  • Attend safety meetings to review proper operation of equipment and receive updated information on changes in procedures.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned or upon request.

Qualifications

Education & Experience Guidelines
Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities required for this position would be:

Education/Training
Must have high school diploma, GED or equivalent.

Experience
Must have a minimum of three (3) years experience in the repair of equipment and vehicles.

Licenses or Certifications Required
Must have valid drivers license

The following generally describes the knowledge and abilities required in order to successfully perform the assigned duties of the position:

Knowledge of:

  • Knowledge of vehicles and equipment repair and maintenance to include small engine repair;tuning and preventative maintenance.
  • Knowledge of organization and operational procedures of maintenance shop of the Parks and Recreational Department.
  • Knowledge of safety rules and procedures.
  • Knowledge of policies, rules and regulations of the City of Phenix City.
  • Knowledge in the use of shop equipment.

Ability to:

  • Reading skills to comprehend operator and reference manuals, directives, gauges and indicators.
  • Writing skills to prepare non-complex forms and records.
  • Verbal communication skills to converse with supervisors, crew-members and co-workers regarding work related activities.
  • Math skills to count, add, and subtract numbers to select appropriate-sized tools and determine correct amount of fluids to be used.
  • Ability to exercise judgment, particularly in tasks involving safety of self and others or efficiency of operations.
  • Ability to work as a team member and have courtesy and tact in dealing with co-workers and the general public, must be able to work independently of direct supervision.
  • Be willing to comply with City of Phenix City policies and work rules.
  • Be willing to work during non-duty hours and weekends when necessary to achieve goals.
