Opelika Road & Cutrate Road Closures

The City of Phenix City and Russell County have a joint project to replace the bridges at the intersection of Opelika Road and Cutrate Road crossing Mill Creek. Due to current FEMA Flood Zone standards the height of the bridge is being raised nine feet from where it is currently constructed. Therefore, the only option to complete this task was to close down both roads to accomplish the necessary grading required to elevate the roads to meet the new bridge elevation. In addition, the Cutrate Road bridge will not be re-constructed. A wider bridge will be constructed along Opelika Road that will include a turn lane onto Cutrate Road re-aligning the intersection from its current location. This was determined to be the most cost-effective option given all the work associated with raising the bridge.

Due to the construction associated with this project, Opelika Road and Cutrate Road will be closed for approximately nine (9) months. Construction will begin on Monday, March 23, 2020 and the roads will be shut down to through traffic beginning at 8:00 a.m. Eastern Standard Time. A detour will be in place routing traffic around the construction on Opelika and Cutrate Roads which is shown in the map; below. Opelika and Cutrate roads will only be closed at the area circled on the attached detour map so local traffic will have access to homes and businesses. During this time, delays should be expected, and travel times adjusted accordingly. Thank you for your cooperation.
