Position Overview

Responsible for assisting the Police Department in insuring the safety of citizens utilizing the recreational facilities of the Idle Hour Sports Complex, Nature Trail, Moon Lake, Tennis Courts and surrounding recreational facilities. Also responsible for assisting the Police Department in preventing vandalism of facilities. Maintain workplace in a clean and orderly manner. May be required to perform light janitorial duties.

Qualifications Required

Must be minimum 18 years of age, have high school diploma or GED equivalent, possess valid driver’s license from state of residence; be able to work a rotating schedule; must be able to communicate and interact with individuals of various races, educational levels and social groups; must possess excellent oral communication skills; must possess writing skills to clearly and neatly complete daily reports; must exercise courtesy, diplomacy and tact in performance of duties; must be able to operate two-way radio; must successfully pass background check and post employment offer drug screen.

Physical Qualifications Required

Must hear well enough to operate a two-way radio and communicate over telephone; must enunciate clearly and speak loudly enough to be heard over a two-way radio; must be dexterous enough to use hands and fingers to write, operate golf cart, operate radio, etc.; must be agile enough to work in all assigned areas of park facilities; must be able to work outdoors in extreme elements (heat and cold).

Qualifications Preferred

Applicant with prior experience as security guard preferred.

Job Summary

Under the supervision of the Director, Park Security Officers are responsible for patrolling the areas from Garrett Stadium to the Sports Complex including: Idle Hour Park, Roy Martin Center, Idle Hour Tennis Center, Moon Lake, and the Nature Trail and/or Amphitheater and Riverwalk. Park Security Officers act as Ambassador of the City of Phenix City, and perform general security duties and other duties as designated by the patrol captain for the suppression and prevention of crimes, preservation of peace, and the protection of property as defined by the laws and ordinances of the City of Phenix City.

Duties & Responsibilities

A. Records – Report accidents and injuries and investigate the cause of the accident or injury. Performs daily maintenance checks of assigned equipment. Write and file a daily activity report.

B. Security Services – Park Security Officers provide security to the Idle Hour Park area by conducting regular patrol, setting up observation post, and providing escorts to employees of the Roy Martin Center and Idle Hour Tennis Facility. Become familiar with the area and persons utilizing the facilities. Observe and investigate conditions, suspicious persons, etc., which may cause or promote commissions of crimes or other incidents that require security services. Operate the police radio and assigned vehicle. Perform other duties as assigned or required.

C. Community Service – Report safety and/or other hazards that may endanger public safety. Observe public gatherings to maintain peace and insure the fair and equitable use of the facilities. Investigate and dispose of minor complaints involving events in the area of responsibility. Disputes that cannot be settled by peaceful persuasion will be reported to the on duty police supervisor.

D. Law Enforcement – Answer emergency calls in the patrol area such as illness, fire, etc. Answer calls involving property crimes, secure the crime scene area, preserve physical evidence, locate possible witnesses, and report to a police officer.

Job Specifications

The Park Security officer must have a working knowledge of the rules and regulations of the Phenix City Police Department and applicable city ordinances. The ability to deal effectively with the general public. Ability to use and maintain for assigned police radio and vehicle. Ability to respond appropriately to emergency or stressful situations. Must have a valid drivers license, social security card and pass a medical physical as required by the police department, as well as, any special clearances concerning criminal records and moral character as may be stipulated by state law.
