Position Overview

Under immediate supervision assists in maintenance of right of ways and limbs and debris removal. Picks up litter and debris from right of way ahead of mowing operations, removes grass clippings and vegetation using hand tools and power trimmers, assists grab-all and limb truck operators in removing piles of debris from right of way by gathering debris and placing in truck. Assist in loading/unloading and maintenance of tools and equipment. Assist in positioning traffic control devices around work zone to conform with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices. Directs traffic around work zone using traffic control devices, hand signals, and two-way radios. Performs additional tasks in support of the department as needed or upon request.

Qualifications Required

Knowledge to operate lawn mowers, weed eaters and blowers. Skills to do general maintenance on equipment to keep operable. Must exercise courtesy and tact in dealing with coworkers and the general public. Must be able to work independent of direct supervision. Ensures tools are in proper condition. Assist in ensuring equipment is in proper working order. Cleans tools and equipment and ensures that tools and equipment are stored properly. Attends departmental and safety meetings as required. Maintains uniforms and safety attire to conform to proper dress codes and safety rules at all times.

Physical Qualifications Required

Must be dexterous enough to use hands and fingers to grasp and manipulate tools and/or equipment; must be agile enough to climb in and out of truck to load and or unload necessary equipment; must be able to work on uneven terrain in traffic areas: must possess adequate upper and lower body strength to maintain control while operating tamping machines and/or other equipment while on uneven terrain; must hear well enough to receive communications over a two-way radio (hearing aid acceptable); must speak clearly and loudly enough to be heard and understood in person and/or over two-way radio; must see well enough to safely operate equipment; must be able to assist in lifting equipment; must be able to withstand exposure to the elements to include extreme heat and/or cold; must pass a pre-employment drug screen.

Job Summary

Under immediate supervision assists in maintenance of right of ways and limbs and debris removal. Assist in placement of traffic control devices and in directing of traffic using flags and hand signals. Picks up litter and debris from right of way ahead of mowing operations, removes grass clippings and vegetation using hand tools and power trimmers, assists grab-all and limb truck operators in removing piles of debris from right of way by gathering debris and placing in truck. Assist in loading/unloading and maintenance of tools and equipment. Performs additional tasks in support of the department as needed or upon request.

Duties & Responsibilities

A. Right-of-way Maintenance (75%) – Picks up litter and debris from right of way ahead of mowing operations to ensure no obstructions or debris is present for the mowers. Removes grass clippings and other vegetation using hand tools. Trims grass and vegetation around obstacles behind the mowing operation using hand tools and power trimmers. Removes piles of debris from right of way by gathering and loading onto truck.

B. Traffic Control (10%) – Assist in positioning traffic control devices around work zone to conform with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices. Directs traffic around work zone using traffic control devices, hand signals, and two-way radios.

C. Maintenance of Equipment (10%) – Gathers necessary tools and equipment for job and loads onto truck. Ensures tools are in proper condition. Assist in ensuring equipment is in proper working order. Cleans tools and equipment and ensures that tools and equipment are stored properly.

D. Services to Department (5%) – Attends departmental and safety meetings as required. Maintains uniforms and safety attire to conform to proper dress codes and safety rules at all times.

Job Specifications

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities – Knowledge of organization and operational procedures of limbs and debris division. Knowledge of proper operation and maintenance of assigned tools and equipment. Knowledge of Public Works safety rules and procedures. Knowledge of policies, rules and regulations of the City of Phenix City. Reading skills to comprehend written directives, policies, and rules. Writing skills to assist in completing daily reports. Verbal communication skills to converse with supervisors and co-workers regarding work related activities. Math skills to count, add and subtract whole numbers. Skills to comprehend written or oral instructions. Skills to operate two-way radio to communicate with other work crews or dispatcher to receive and transmit information. Ability to follow instructions and efficiently complete tasks. Ability to exercise judgement particularly in tasks involving safety of self and others. Ability to work under immediate supervision and carry out assigned tasks. Ability to work as a member of a team.

Credentials and Experience – Training and experience in the maintenance workforce.

Special Requirements – Be willing to comply with City of Phenix City policies and work rules. Be willing to work during non-duty hours, holidays and weekends when necessary to achieve goals. Be willing to wear appropriate safety gear and follow necessary safety procedures.
